Acrylic on canvas, 60” x 40” (152 cm x 102 cm), 2020.
Painted during the first year of the pandemic, A Thousand Small Departures began with a simple, repetitive act: painting one petal-like form after another. As the marks accumulated, they began to suggest flowers, cells, bodies, openings and enclosures—forms poised somewhere between growth and dissolution.
At a time shaped by isolation, bodily uncertainty and an intensified awareness of mortality, repetition became a way of staying with the present. No two forms are quite alike. Their tiny deviations gradually become the painting: small departures from order, expectation and sameness.
