Made during the first pandemic lockdowns, Contentment Study II continues an investigation begun with circles: forms so simple they might stand for completeness, happiness or containment. Here they soften into pale mint and pink shapes that hover somewhere between peony buds, cells, ova and ornament.
Repetition offered a structure for living inside an uncertain stretch of time. But the painting never quite resolves into serenity. The shapes crowd, touch and change as they accumulate. Contentment becomes less a destination than an experiment: something practiced repeatedly, imperfectly and in the midst of everything else.
